Last week was more work on the roof. After the main roof was framed up we added all the blocking between the rafters at the top of the walls. This needed to be done before the plywood could be put down on the roof. We also added a trim detail to the outside rafters to match the existing house.
The plywood went down with the help of my dad and father-in-law. It took two evenings to get it done. Since the addition is fairly small, there weren't that many sheets of plywood that didn't need some sort of cutting. Right before the last of the plywood

went down we cut open the existing roof so there would be access from the existing attic into the new attic.
There was some serious prep work that needed to be done before the roof could be started on the kitchen addition. Since the existing exterior wall will be removed between the new and existing kitchen, there will be a beam added which will support the existing roof and ceiling. However, the existing ceiling joists are insufficient

because the ends bear on interior walls that will be removed later on. To solve this problem we needed to replace the existing ceiling joists with new ones that span the entire distance that will be open. This was complicated by the fact that we have old knob and tube wiring that is run through our attic and passes through the middle of the existing ceiling joists and is buried by nasty, blown-in insulation. This last weekend, after a few miserable days in the attic, we were able to get the wiring all re-routed and

the ceiling joists replaced.
We can now move on to building the roof over the kitchen addition. This week we will be installing the beam that will support the existing roof and new ceiling joists and building the ceiling and roof over the kitchen addition.
