Tearing Down Walls

The house project has had to take a back seat lately to a busy few weeks at work, but we are getting back on track now and it's payoff time, baby!

That's right, the last of the demo is done! The last of the framing is done! We have a dining room! It's like a whole different house.

Two weekends ago my parents came up to give us a hand. My dad and I got a lot done! We started by leveling the low spot in the floor as best we could and getting the post in place. There was no getting it perfect since our 50 year old house is nowhere near perfectly level.

Next we built the wall that encloses the new hallway to the master bedroom. The wall went up pretty quick once we had the location marked out on the floor and the ceiling drywall cut where it would support the ceiling joists.

Then the real fun: tearing down all the existing walls that made up the old kitchen. What a gratifying experience! It was a messy job getting the old walls out, mostly due to the blown attic insulation that would fall from the ceiling when we pulled the top plates out, but it was sure worth it! The space feels so open. We have lots of room to sit around the dinner table now.

Since then we've been working on getting the drywall up. We also have insulated some of the interior walls for sound reduction.

For the next few weeks we will be working on getting the drywall and soundproofing done. Then we will need a drywall inspection. After that we're considering having someone do the drywall mud and tape this time.
