Framed!

I know it's almost Friday and I haven't sent an update yet. This week has just flown by. But the big news is... The framing is done!

Last week we got the beam in that will support the existing ceiling and roof when we open up the wall into the new kitchen. Once that was in we started on the framing of the ceiling and roof of the new kitchen. It's a pretty small are so you would thing it would go real quickly, but this was my first time building a hip roof and it is definitely more complicated than the gable roof that is over the bedroom addition.

Wednesday we had some help from a good friend and we got the ceiling up, the ridge set, and the common and the hip rafters on. The hip rafters took a while to figure out because of all the angles and the fact that they lie in a different plane than the common rafters. Fortunately, my geometry came back to me pretty well - SOH, CAH, TOA.

Thursday we got all of the jack rafters in that connect to the hip rafters. That took a while too. I was trying to use a "common difference" (a length that once figured out you add to the length of the previous rafter to get the length of the next rafter). Only after I cut them all and started to put them up did I discover that they weren't right at all. In the end I just measured each one and cut it individually.

Friday we had 3 generations of Ciraulo men finishing the roof over the kitchen. My dad and grandpa helped me get the plywood on. That part went pretty quickly so we moved on to some smaller miscellaneous things that needed to be finished up.

Saturday my grandpa came over with his truck and we took a huge load to the dump. We had been piling debris in front of the house for weeks and it had gotten pretty big. Stucco from tearing the siding off, eaves and gutter from cutting them back for the framing, roofing that had been torn off where the new roofs tie in, and a ton of off-cuts from all the framing. It sure felt good to get rid of that big pile even though it was a chore to load and unload.

Just this past Tuesday we had our next inspection. I thought this inspection would be for the framing, but it was really just to verify the nailing on the siding and the roof. We passed under the condition that we had to add some more nails on the roof where it attached to the blocking at the eaves. The framing inspection will happen with the plumbing and electrical so they can see and holes or notches that are made for pipe and wire.

So we are now free to cover up the house and get it water tight! I can't believe we are already there! We will be starting with the roof. The roofing was all delivered today and we have started putting it on. That's what the focus will be the rest of this week and weekend. I could sure use 2 or 3 guys this Saturday to help with the roofing, so let me know if you are available.
