Roofing - A Pain in the Neck

The roofing is or was going really well. The materials were delivered Thursday morning and it was an exact match to our existing roof. We started papering the roof on Wed. and got as far as possible with the paper on Thurs. We couldn't paper everything because the new roofing bundles were stacked on the new roof and there's no way we were going to move it all just to get the paper on. So on Thurs. we stated laying some roof. It went really well and is quite satisfying work to see the transformation.

On Friday our plumber came out to put the sewer vents through the roof. We needed this in order to put on the flashing and shingles. We continued to make good progress on Friday even though it is fairly slow going working alone. By Friday evening my back was letting me know that it didn't appreciate all the bending over.

Saturday was a big push and we had some help to get most of the roof finished. Probably 85% done. The weather was perfect - not too hot, partly cloudy and a slight breeze. Things also went more quickly with two people working. Saturday afternoon my body was starting to object to the constant stand-up, sit-down, hunched over routine, but I had to push through the rest of the day. That night I was in pain - especially my neck.

Sunday I was so stiff I couldn't move my head and had a hard time finding any position that was comfortable. I've been layed out since and am on a course of prescription muscle relaxants and chiropractor visits. Each day gets a little better and today I have been able to spend the morning sitting up without much pain.

It looks like there may be rain in the forecast so I really hope I'm able to get back up there and finish the roof in the next few days. We're also hoping to get the waterproof paper on the outside walls before then. Our windows should be delivered soon so the house may look a bit different by the next blog entry.

I hope the rain didn't set you back any, but then again, I hope you're getting some rest for your body, too! I continue to be WOWED by all your hard work, Brad!
